An important new local history project
The EDF Renewables Barmoor Windfarm Community Benefit Fund has awarded a grant to fund a project to research the local and national consequences of the Battle of Homildon Hill (1402), and the involvement of Harry Hotspur who was heir to the Earl of Northumberland.
The project will be led by members of the local team that designed and maintain the Flodden Battlefield Trail, and also produced the Battle of Carham Reenactment Weekend to commemorate the 1000th anniversary of the battle that fixed the Anglo/Scottish Border on the River Tweed. Work will be completed under the banner of The Remembering Flodden Project as this already has charitable status.
What will the project produce?
A major timeline-based website which covers and explains this very involved and often confusing period of English and Scottish history.
An online App which describes a route across the battlefield and explains the theories and likely events of the day of battle.
The results of the research into the many topics mentioned above and also any new topic which arises as a consequence of our work.
Leaflets, talks and publicity to boost interest both locally and for the benefit of visitors and local businesses.
An investigation into historical ‘interesting times’ history plays of William Shakespeare.
To complete this project we are asking for local help
We will need to recruit a new and larger working group of volunteers to undertake research into the many and varied aspects of this, and other connected events and people.
We will focus on two main areas for investigation:

- The geology and topography of Humbleton Hill
- Events leading to the battle
- Those involved
- The routes taken to the conflict
- The battle itself
- Direct local consequences of the battle
- The larger national impact of the battle
The life and times of Harry Hotspur
- Who was Hotspur?
- Why was he famous?
- Was he a hero or a hooligan?
- Hotspur’s military achievements and failures
- Who else was involved? - Other notable persons
- The wider aspects of the Border situation
- The later years of The 100 Years War
- The Wars of the Roses and the Border Reivers
